The Status Quo: A Region in Jeopardy

The four reactors of Cattenom were built starting in 1979 in the face of massive international resistance and with state subsidies. For decades, this high-risk technology has endangered the entire Saar-Lor-Lux Greater Region. Numerous breakdowns and incidents prove: this facility has reached its limit.

Nuclear power is a dead end. The year 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and the 15th anniversary of Fukushima. These anniversaries serve as a stark warning: the “unimaginable” can happen at any time—even in the heart of Europe. From CO₂-intensive uranium mining to the daily risk of a core meltdown: this technology is neither clean nor safe. With the unresolved nuclear waste problem, we are leaving a dangerous and expensive mortgage for future generations. Nuclear power is costing us our future.

The Planned Lifetime Extension

In the middle of our border region, the operator EDF (Électricité de France) is risking a catastrophe: instead of finally decommissioning the decades-old reactors, operation is planned for at least ten more years.

  • Lack of Protection: The facility has almost no structural protection against modern threats such as plane crashes, terrorist attacks, or drone strikes. Fukushima showed that even in high-tech countries, supposed safety guarantees fail in an emergency. Real-world plane crashes near other nuclear power plants further confirm the potential danger.
  • Climate Risks: Record heat and low water levels jeopardize vital cooling. Simultaneously, the plant is not designed for the extreme flash floods that are increasing due to climate change.
  • The Moselle Ecosystem: As extreme energy wasters, the reactors discharge massive amounts of waste heat into the Moselle. This wastewater, which can reach up to 33°C, robs the river of oxygen and destroys the ecological balance. Thus, the reactors become ecological time bombs.

Despite these dangers, EDF continues to keep technical details of the risk assessment under lock and key.

Our appeal remains clear: No lifetime extension — Cattenom must be taken off the grid!

Our Goals and Demands

In view of the unacceptable risks, we demand from governments and those in positions of responsibility:

  • Cross-border Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): Full transparency regarding the risks in accordance with the Espoo Convention (EU law).
  • Independent Studies: Research into the increasing dangers posed by the climate catastrophe for nuclear plant operation.
  • Legal Resistance: Exhausting all legal avenues to prevent continued operation.
  • Real Public Education: The population must be told the truth. In the event of a disaster, there is no effective protection against radiation. Iodine tablets are a mere “fig leaf” — in the event of a meltdown, they would arrive too late or not at all due to the expected traffic chaos and panic-stricken flight.

We call on all citizens, parties, and environmental groups in the Greater Region: Get involved against the lifetime extension and participate in protest actions!

How You Can Support Us

Become part of the resistance:

  1. Inform & Mobilize: Make our protest visible: share our posters and graphics on social networks. Talk to people in your circles about the topic. Support the campaign with your group, club, or organization. Use our stickers, postcards, and posters.
  2. Political Pressure: Speak with your representatives. Do not support political parties that rely on dangerous nuclear power (such as the German AfD or parts of the German CDU/CSU and FDP).
  3. Local Energy Transition: Support energy-saving programs and renewable energy in the hands of citizens in our region.

Let us show that we reject the lifetime extension. We demand the decommissioning of the breakdown-prone reactors of Cattenom and a joint effort for real climate protection and renewable energy in our border region.

Borderless danger requires borderless resistance!

Shut down Cattenom — before it shuts us down!
