STOP CATTENOM: No life extension for the breakdown-prone nuclear power plant!

To: French Government, EDF, State Government of Rhineland-Palatinate, State Government of Saarland, Luxembourg Government
Launched by: Campaign STOP CATTENOM! Anti-Atom-Netz Trier / BUND Rheinland-Pfalz / MAUS e.V. & others

The Cattenom nuclear power plant, located just 12 km from the German and 9 km from the Luxembourg border, is among the most breakdown-prone and dangerous nuclear facilities in Europe. Despite massive safety deficiencies and obsolete technology, the operator EDF plans to extend the reactors’ operation by at least ten years. This exposes the entire Saar-Lor-Lux Greater Region to an incalculable risk – ranging from technical incidents to threats from terrorism or climate change.

Enough is enough! The risk must end! STOP CATTENOM!

Our Demand:

We call on the French government and EDF to immediately halt the planned life extension.

At the same time, we demand that the German Federal Government and the state governments of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland:

  • Political Pressure: Take a decisive stand against continued operation at all diplomatic levels.
  • Legal Action: Exhaust all legal avenues to prevent the life extension.
  • Enforce Transparency: Insist on a comprehensive, cross-border Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in accordance with EU law (Espoo Convention).
  • No Illusion of Safety: Acknowledge that there is no effective disaster control, instead of relying on insufficient measures such as iodine tablets.

The safety of millions of people in the Greater Region must take precedence over diplomatic considerations and profit interests.

Why is this important?

A major accident in Cattenom would make our homeland uninhabitable. The plant is located in the middle of a densely populated region, only a few kilometers from Trier, Saarbrücken, and Luxembourg City. We cannot afford to ignore this risk.

The main reasons for an immediate shutdown:

  1. Outdated technology at its limit: The reactors are over 40 years old. They were never designed for such a long lifespan and are increasingly prone to malfunctions.
  2. Lack of protection: The facility is not structurally sufficient to withstand modern threats such as targeted terrorist attacks or aircraft crashes.
  3. Climate change as a risk: Increasingly hot summers and the low water levels of the Moselle River massively jeopardize the cooling of the reactors.

We must stop tempting fate. Furthermore, nuclear power leaves behind radioactive waste for which there is still no solution. Please help us end this dangerous path before it is too late.

Please sign now to increase political pressure and protect our region from a nuclear catastrophe!

Together for the decommissioning of Cattenom.
